Hungary PM dismantles the state media conglomerate

BUDAPEST, 31 July. - (ANA) - Hungary’s media reckoning: how Péter Magyar is tearing down Orbán’s propaganda empire.

By shutting down M1’s news and dismantling the state media conglomerate that powered Orbán across 16 years, Magyar is testing how far a new Hungarian government can go in rewriting the rules of information and how loudly the old guard in Budapest and Brussels will protest.

Before the 2026 elections, Hungary's now prime minister Péter Magyar appeared on public-service studio in September 2024. It was his only appearance. He then returned only after his election victory – and even then the interview with him was conducted in a patronising, lecturing tone. Magyar then, with his typical vehemence, listed everything the public-service media had done and not done during Orbán’s system.

One of the election promises of Magyar’s Tisza party was to stop the propaganda and transform the public-service media.   - (ANA) -
